Caring for your Lighthouse Candle Factory Product

Safety, SAFETY, Safety!!

At the Lighthouse Candle Factory, we're passionate about our customers using our products safely.  Follow these general candle care rules to have a slow burning candle smokeless candle :

  • Never leave a candle burning unattended, it must always be within sight of a responsible adult.
  • Make sure the candle on a heat resistant surface or in a holder.
  • Keep the candle away from combustible materials, like curtains, towels, clothing, etc.
  • Keep candles away from children and pets!
  • Never allow children to burn a candle unless supervised by an adult.
  • Burn the candle in a well-ventilated room, but keep the candle out of drafts, vents or air currents. This will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.
  •  Don’t burn a candle all the way down. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1/2 inch of wax remains in the bottom of the container, it is time for a new candle. This will prevent the flame from contacting the bottom of the glass which could cause it to shatter.
  • Never burn Votive candles or Tealight Candles without placing them in an appropriate holder.

The Wick: Manage it Wisely!

Proper care of the wick is essential for an even-burning, slow burning candle experience. Trimming is of the "utmost" importance. When a wick is too long, more wax is supplied to the flame than it can burn, causing a "dirty flame" and excess soot production. If the wick is trimmed too short, the flame will be too small to generate enough heat to properly pool the wax. Follow these candle care tips to help you have a smokeless candle  experience:

  • Before each use, trim the wick to about 1/4″ above the top of the wax.
  • The goal is to produce a clean 1″ tall flame after the wax has pooled.
  • Be sure to remove all wick trimmings and carbon buildup from the candle before lighting it
  • If you trim the wick too short, don't worry, continued burning will usually allow the wick to reach an appropriate length again. If necessary, remove some of the liquid wax with a spoon being careful not to spill it on yourself, others or nearby items.
  • Keeping the wick centered in the candle is crucial. If the wick has moved to one side, keep it centered by moving it while the wax is liquid or still soft after extinguishing the candle. DO NOT use your fingers, use a screwdriver, pencil, spoon or butter knife. Never allow the wick or flame to come in contact with the glass!
  • Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
  • Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
  • Don’t touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
  • Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.

Burn Times: Yes, they MATTER!

The rate at which a candle burns is critical to a successful smokeless candle experience. If it burns too slow, you will not get the famous fragrant experience you expect from our candles, if it burns too fast, well let's just say you won't be happy with that either. At the Lighthouse Candle Factory we take great pride in our products and place tremendous effort into making sure the size and type of wicks we use perfectly match the wax and container used. As a manufacturer, that's all we can do, the rest is up to our valued customers in the way they use their candle. Candle Care is of the utmost importance to ensure a slow burning candle experience.

Each time you light your candle, please ensure that it burns long enough to melt the wax completely across the top of the candle. For our larger candles, this may take 3-4 hours to achieve. Doing this will ensure that you experience the maximum fragrance "throw" for the entirety of the candle and prevent "tunneling" down the center of the candle.

It is recommended that candles not be burned for more than four hours at a time to prevent excess carbon buildup on the wick and mushrooming of the wick. Please allow the candle to cool for at least two hours before relighting it.

Wax Melts

All Lighthouse Candle Factory Tarts (wax melts) are produced to the exact specifications of our famous candles, making them the most fragrant on the market. They are designed to be used in Wax Warmers (also referred to as Burners). This provides the same fragrant experience without having an open flame. Light bulbs inside the Warmer are used to melt the wax, emitting the scent.

Caution: LHCFactory Tarts are larger than most on the market. While this gives our customers more wax for the money, the customer may need to cut our melts in half depending on the size of the tray in their Warmer to prevent liquid wax from spilling out.
