Frequently Asked Questions About Candles & Other Stuff
The following is a list of the most frequently asked questions about candles and other stuff that have been posed to The Lighthouse Candle Factory listed by topic:
What kind of wax do you use in your candles?
The Lighthouse Candle Factory custom blends our own wax for our primary line of candles and melt products based on a proprietary recipe. It consists of both, premium 100% Soy wax and high quality Food-Grade-Paraffin wax.
For our Soy Candle line, we use a premium 100% Soy wax.
Does The Lighthouse Candle Factory only use pure Essential Oils in your candles?
No. Pure essential oils are generally not recommended for use in candles due to several factors, including their flammability, low flash points, and potential for scent loss and altered chemical composition when exposed to heat. Additionally, some essential oils can be harmful to pets. While we do offer a pure Eucalyptus 100% Soy Candle and a pure Lemon 100% Soy Candle that use 100% pure essential oils that are confirmed to be suitable for candles, the remainder of our proprietary scents are fragrance oils made specifically for candles and to the highest quality standards in the industry. All LHCF oils are paraben and phthalate free.
Are your fragrance oils safe?
Yes! All fragrance oils utilized by The Lighthouse Candle Factory are formulated to comply with International Fragrance Association (IFRA) and Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) standards.
Do I need to book a Candle Making Class in advance?
Yes, a reservation is required for LHCF Candle Making Classes to ensure that adequate space and resources are available for you. At The Lighthouse Candle Factory, we believe in personalized attention to our class attendees. We limit our class size to twelve (12) to ensure each student receives sufficient Instructor attention to accomplish the goal of teaching attendees how to make a 100% Soy candle from scratch. Why is a LHCF Candle Making Class better than a Candle Bar experience?
At The Lighthouse Candle Factory everything we do is unique! That’s why we set our Candle Making Classes up differently than the typical Candle Bar experience. At a Candle Bar, you show up and pick out a fragrance (some might even let you blend a couple together to create a unique aroma). Then, you mix your chosen fragrance oil into wax that the company has already prepared to make your “personal” candle. We don’t think that there is much “personal” about that process. So, we decided to teach our attendees how to make a candle from start to finish. In our class, you will measure out you own wax, melt your own wax, blend your chosen fragrance creation into your own wax, set your own wick and hand-pour your very own candle. Now, that’s “PERSONAL” in our mind.
How much does it cost to come to a Candle Making Class?
The cost of a LHCF Candle Making Class is $40 per person. This includes all materials and equipment, as well as the appropriate instruction necessary to create your own 7oz 100% Soy candle.
Will my candle be ready for me to take it home at the end of the class?
No. Due to the temperature that the candle must be poured at it takes a minimum of 2.5 hours for the candle to “setup” enough that it can be safely transported. Candles can be picked up in our Showroom on Thursdays and Fridays 10am-6pm or on Saturdays 10am-5pm. If you are from out-of-town, LHCF can ship your candle to you for $9, payable at the class. At LHCF, we want to make sure that your candle is PERFECT and that you don’t end up with a mess in your car.
IMPORTANT NOTE: 100% Soy candles require a 2 week “cure time” prior to burning them for the first time. Please do not burn your candle prior to the 2 week mark.
Am I required to sign a Liability Waiver in order to take a Candle Making Class?
Yes, each individual must complete a LHCF Candle Making Class Liability Waiver prior to participation in our classes.
What is the minimum age to take your Candle Making Class?
Participants in The Lighthouse Candle Factory’s classes must be at least ten (10) years old. Anyone under the age of eighteen (18) must be accompanied and supervised by an adult that is also registered for the class. This adult must have the legal authority to sign a LHCF Candle Making Class Waiver on behalf of the Minor.
Can I bring my own candle vessel to your Candle Making Class to put my candle in?
No. As with all of the candle vessels we use to produce our lines of candles, LHCF performs test burns to ensure that the vessel(s) used during our Candle Making Classes are suitable for a candle and burn safely. It is not possible to perform test burns on your vessel. However, LHCF may be able to fill your vessel with a candle through our Custom Candle Program.
Are private classes available for groups or special occasions?
Yes, we would be happy to host groups for special occasions or corporate events. Contact us for details.
How long does it take you to ship my order?
Shipping lead times range from 1-10 days dependent upon the stock status of your items, and the day/time you place your order. If one or more items are backordered” you will be notified of the estimated date your package will ship. You will also be notified of any delays in the processing of your order.
I received an email with a tracking number but the carrier says they haven't received it yet. What's the problem?
99% of the time this is normal. A tracking number is generated at the time the shipping label is printed at the LHCF facility as soon as the package is sealed up. Each carrier utilized by LHCF only has one (1) scheduled pickup each weekday at our facility. If your label is printed after that pickup time, the package will not be picked up until the next business day. While LHCF fulfills orders on weekends and some holidays, these packages cannot be picked up until the next business day.

Can a glass jar shatter from the heat of a candle?
YES! It is possible for a glass jar to crack or shatter when burning a candle. This can occur for several reasons, including:
- Burning a candle for too long without extinguishing it. (Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours)
- Burning the candle too far down in the jar. (When the solid wax in the bottom of the jar reaches 1/2 inch from the bottom, STOP burning it!)
- Thermal shock is a sudden temperature change. (DO NOT light a cold candle jar. DO NOT place a hot candle on a cold surface.)
- An off-center wick. When you extinguish your candle each time, move the wick back to the center if it has moved.
- Thin glass.
- Flaws in the glass that may or may not be visible to the naked eye.
- Damage to the jar. (NEVER burn a candle that has been dropped or knocked over, even if you do not see any damage.)
